Job description

The Department of Industrial Design is the oldest and most respected Industrial Design programme on the African continent. Research focus areas are design research, innovation, appropriate technology, design for sustainability, design education, gender in design, and medical device design.

  • Resource control:

o  Preparation and maintenance of industrial and small workshop equipment.o  General stock control into. ordering and storage of stock according to Health and Safety requirements.o  Documenting the issuing of equipment to students and staff.o  Opening and closing of venues.

  • Service to students:

o  Assist students to use machinery.o  Provide students with correct equipment from the tool store.

  • General assistance in the workshop space in terms of availability, ensuring students adhere to workshop health and safety rules and regulations, providing first aid when needed, and ensuring students participate in workshop cleanliness.
  • Service to staff:

o  Ad hoc activities to support the Workshop Technician to ensure the smooth running of the workshop.o  Preparation of resources for staff.o  Liaison with cleaners to maintain workshop cleanliness.
Responsibilities:  o  To provide general assistance to the Department of Industrial Design on technical, administrative and other tasks.

Minimum requirements

  • Grade 12 / Matric qualification.
  • Experience in a Workshop environment. Evidence of this needs to present in your CV.
  • Practical/Technical Assistant background in the maintenance and repair of workshop equipment.
  • First Aid Certificate (or willingness to become First Aid qualified).
