Department Description

The Department of Molecular Medicine & Haematology and Wits/SAMRC Antiviral Gene Therapy Research Unit in the School of Pathology are seeking a motivated laboratory assistant to join its productive teams. The teams conduct teaching and research aimed at applying modern methods of molecular biology to treat, prevent and understand mechanisms of disease that are common to southern Africa. A particular focus is on viral infections. The incumbent will be primarily be involved in providing support to teaching and research programmes. Ideally, the incumbent will assume duty on 1 February 2022.

Brief Description

Key responsibilities include the following:
The incumbent will be primarily responsible for the maintenance of the cleanliness and tidiness of the departmental teaching and research facilities on the 7th floor section of the Department of Molecular Medicine and Haematology. Main duties include, but are not restricted to, the following:
·       Sweeping floors, mopping floors and wiping of laboratory benches,
·       Dilution of concentrated solutions required for cleaning and sterilizing,
·       Washing (using dishwasher), packing and unpacking of glassware and plasticware,
·       Filling boxes with pipette tips and Eppendorf tubes, autoclaving and stocktaking,
·       Recording temperature logs of fridges, freezers and coldrooms,
·       Photocopying, collating and filing of documents,
·       Collection of mail and transport of documents between local buildings of the Faculty of Health Sciences
·       Emptying bins in offices and laboratories,
·       Maintenance of tearoom supplies and cleanliness of crockery and cutlery.

Previous Experience
Experience with laboratory maintenance would be useful. 

Preferences:·       
Experience with maintenance of research laboratories
