POST-BASIC PHARMACIST ASSISTANTS: ETHEKWINI

PURPOSE

Health Systems Trust (HST) wishes to appoint roving Post-Basic Pharmacist Assistants for the ADAPT Project in eThekwini District, KwaZulu-Natal to render pharmaceutical support for COVID-19 vaccination. The incumbents will be responsible for cold chain management, ordering, monitoring and evaluation, as well as surveillance and reporting.

These are a fixed-term contract positions, renewable subject to continuation of funding. The positions will be roving, to serve health facilities in the south of eThekwini District.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ordering of COVID-19 vaccines for participating vaccination sites
  • Maintenance of cold chain from receipt through to administration
  • Monitoring the reconstitution and labelling of vaccines at the sites
  • Management of tally sheets to record daily usage and losses of vaccines and ancillary supplies
  • Monitoring and reporting of adverse events following immunisation (AEFI) surveillance and field investigations
  • Maintaining supplies for the management of anaphylaxis at the outreach sites
  • Appropriate discarding of medical waste in line with Health Care Risk Waste (HCRW) regulations
  • Ground-level co-ordination with hospitals and mobile outreach sites to maintain vaccine availability
  • Undertaking secondary activities for all aspects of ethical stock control, including re-ordering of stock, maintaining dedicated stock areas for organisation and expiry dates, and conducting cyclical and full stock-taking
  • Updating minimum and maximum levels to ensure that sufficient levels of stock are available at all times
  • Ensuring compliance with good clinical/pharmacy practice
  • Maintaining the Stock Visibility Solution (SVS) and RX Solution systems
  • Supporting the maintenance of accurate and updated records on pharmacy activities
  • Maintaining effective communication and query resolution
  • Performing related administrative and housekeeping tasks, and other functions as deemed necessary
  • Representing HST and the facility in stakeholder meetings and workshops when requested.

REQUIREMENTS

The incumbent must reside in or (at his/her own cost) relocate to the district before the start-date of the job, and must be willing to be rotated to support all clinics in the district at any time.

Qualifications

  • Registration and active status as a Post-Basic Pharmacist Assistant with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC)
  • Valid Code 8 driver’s licence.

Experience

  • One year of experience as a qualified Post-Basic Pharmacist Assistant with the South African Pharmacy Council
  • More than two years’ experience of working in Department of Health facilities
  • Experience in supporting COVID-19 vaccination is preferable.

Recommended competence and skills

  • Knowledge of good pharmacy practice and cold chain management
  • Knowledge of SVS, RX Solution, and the Electronic Vaccination Data System (EVDS) is preferable
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work as a part of team, with good people skills
  • Willingness to work in and drive to remote rural areas
  • Computer literate
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Fluency in English is essential, and in isiZulu would be an advantage.

REMUNERATION

A salary package commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience and qualifications and in line with HST’s Job Grading System will be offered.
