About Sonke
Founded in 2006, Sonke is a womxn’s rights organisation that is committed to feminist principles, using a rights-based and gender transformative approach to achieve human rights and gender justice. Our vision is a poverty free world in which womxn, children, men and gender non-conforming individuals enjoy equitable, caring, healthy and happy relationships that contribute to the development of gender just and democratic societies. Sonke strengthens governments, civil society and citizen’s capacity to advance gender justice and womxn’s rights, prevent gender-based violence, and reduce the spread of HIV and the impact of AIDS, and in this way contributing to social justice and the elimination of poverty.
About the Generation G Programme
The Generation G partnership strives towards the creation of gender-just and violence-free societies for young people in their full diversity. By gender justice, we mean a fair, equitable world for all individuals regardless of their gender. The Generation G partnership is a collaboration of partners in the seven countries with a global consortium consisting of Rutgers (lead), ABAAD, Promundo and Sonke Gender Justice.
The Generation G partnership raises public support, advocates for improved policies and laws, and strengthens civil society, focusing specifically on gender-based violence, the unequal division of care and women’s lack of access to civic space, as a way to contribute to gender justice. As such, the Generation G partnership directly contributes to SDG5, SDG16, and the Ministry’s policy on women’s rights and gender equality. The partnership addresses three key interrelated challenges: gender-based violence, the unequal division of care and women’s lack of access to civic space.
As youth (15-32) are our key actors and key impact group, they are actively included in decision-making processes, as well as the design and implementation of key strategies. We make a special effort to amplify voices of youth, particularly those who are often excluded because of their age, gender, gender identity/expression, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.
Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities will include:
- Taking pictures, recording videos and conducting interviews for purposes of creating media and social media content
- Hosting online meetings and webinars.
- Support the project coordinator to track media and online media interest and engagements
- Track monthly online reach and engagements generated by online content.
- Support the Programme Manager on PT and consortium coordination, engagements and content building
Requirements
- Good command of the English language and preferably be able to speak an additional South African language
- Demonstrated ability to communicate our work and its impact
- Experience of social media account management (Facebook; Twitter; Instagram; TikTok etc) and be able to grow social media follower base
- Basic understanding of Gender Transformative Approaches
- Willingness to travel to rural areas of South Africa
- Applicants should be between the ages of 18 – 32
Reporting
The intern will be supervised by the communications manager with line reporting to the project coordinators and manager
