INTERNSHIP POSITIONS AT MARKET THEATRE FOUNDATION
The Market Theatre Foundation in partnership with Yes4Youth have the opportunity to offer currently unemployed young people from previously disadvantaged communities the opportunity to rejoin the workforce through a sponsored internship programme.
The successful applicants will have a 12-month fixed term contract at R5000.00 p.m. which will them to benefit from being associated with and gaining hands on experience at the prestigious and world-renowned cultural institution in the Market Theatre Foundation as well as a dynamic, innovative and lateral thinking creative. By taking up the various internship positions offered by the Market Theatre Foundation the successful interns will work with interesting colleagues, learn a wide range of skills that will provide invaluable work experience and possibly connect with people who could offer future permanent career opportunities in the creative arts industries – as well as in alternate career fields.
STAGE MANAGER X2
Successful incumbent will assist stage managers to ensure that every assigned production is stage managed efficiently and effectively to a predefined process and procedure as documented in the Stage Managers manual. Ensure efficient and effective management of the communication channels between stakeholders, Act in the best interest of the company.
Position requires:
- Degree/Diploma Performing Arts, relevant Theatre Qualifications
- Ability to manage and motivate a team of people in a very stressful environment
- Able to work under pressure
GENERAL ADMIN ASSISTANT
Generic front office management and reception services, attend to visitors and deal with enquiries on the phone and face to face. Supply information regarding the organization to the general public, clients and customers. Filing, records management and administrative functions.
Position requires:
- Diploma in Office Admin or equivalent
- Knowledge of Administrative and clerical procedures
- Knowledge of computers and relevant software application
- Knowledge of customer service principles and practices
- People and communication skills
- Ability to operate a switchboard
SOUND TECHNICIAN INTERN
The incumbent will be a member of the Market Theatre’s professional technical production team and be involved in the staging of Market Theatre productions specifically from a sound perspective. The applicant will be working with Market Theatre’s sound technician to do set ups for events, productions and outside events, Applicant will require technical experience in sound engineering, sound set up, patching and mixing.
Position Requires:
- Degree/Diploma in sound technology/engineering, performing arts
- This position will suit a sound engineering graduate or a person with previous sound experience.
- Programming cues with a mixing console for a shows or events.
- Operating analogue or digital mixing consoles for shows and events.
PRODUCING ADMINISTRATOR
The incumbent will work in the Producer’s office and gain in-depth knowledge of the administration behind professional theatrical productions.
Position Requires:
- Degree/Ndip in Office Administration or equivalent or arts related qualification
- Applicants will assist Producer and Assistant Producer with the administration of quotations and contracts
- computer literate
- basic accounting, communication, and project management skills
- Assist Production department with the drafting and maintenance of schedules
SOCIAL MEDIA INTERN
The incumbent will join the Market Theatre Foundation’s overall Brand & Communications team. The incumbent will work closely within the MTF’s team to communicate effectively with external stakeholders through publicity, and involved in various activities concerning the organization’s visibility, awareness and promotion of content starting from PR, social media, events, and content creation. Ultimately, serve as the face and voice of our brand and manage all community communications.
Position Requires:
- Basic knowledge of campaign management from conceptualisation to execution
- Awareness of the nature and role of theatre and entertainment industries.
- Hands on experience with social media monitoring
- Ability to interpret social media traffic, impressions, target and audience
- Knowledge of online marketing
- A relevant degree/diploma in Marketing, Brand Communications, Media studies.
PUBLICITY INTERN
The successful incumbent will be working closely with the Senior publicist and assisting with the writing of media releases, scheduling PR events, conducting research, and other duties delegated by the Senior publicist.
Position Requires:
- Degree/Ndip in public relations, communications/ media studies
- An understanding of marketing, social media, graphic design, theatre and copywriting.
- Excellent writing and communication skills.
- Basic administrative skills, computer literacy
AUDIENCE & MARKETING DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANT
The applicant will be a member of the Market Theatre Foundation’s Brand & Communications team and will work towards growing an audience base for the Market Theatre. The applicants will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic marketing and sales related environment. The applicant will have the opportunity to interact with the general public as well as educational institutions in promoting and finding audiences for Market Theatre productions.
Position Requires:
- A Marketing Degree or equivalent qualification is essential for this internship.
- Minimum 1 year sales experience would be advantageous
- Good communication skills
- Target driven
- Ability to cope with rejection.
- Ability to remain calm in fast-paced environments
- Structured individual, with good time management
GRAPHIC DESIGNER INTERN
The Graphic Design Intern is responsible for providing support for the marketing department through a variety of channels, print, digital, web, video and other as assigned.
Position Requires
- Degree in Fine/Visual Arts, Communications, Media, or a related field
- knowledge of layouts, typography, line composition, colour, and other graphic design fundamentals
- Excellent computer skills, preferably MAC
- Experience with InDesign, Illustrator, Adobe Creative Suite, and knowledge of video editing software,
- Strong creative and analytical skills
- Compelling portfolio of graphic design work
RESEARCH AND ARCHIVING x2
The incumbent will assist to co-ordinate the development of archive and research programming for the Market Photo Workshop. This position supports the public programming and administrative capacities of projects and courses, exhibitions, research and the Photo Workshop library.
Position Requires:
- Tertiary qualification in Humanities (qualification in Photography, visual and heritage archives will be advantageous)
- Computer skills (Mac and PC, Excel and Word, E-mail
- Be driven and passionate about photography and the importance of archives for South Africa’s future
- Be able to work under pressure, unsupervised and show strong initiative
- Show a critical awareness of the nature and role of photography, archives in general, and of the education and development landscape for African practitioners
- Background and understanding of Arts, Culture and Heritage-related industries will be advantageous
PROJECTS ASSISTANT INTERN
A successful incumbent will work closely with projects manager to help coordinate and to achieve project objectives and also assist with administrative duties.
Position Requires:
- Tertiary qualification in Humanities (qualification in Photography, visual and heritage archives will be advantageous)
- Computer skills (Mac and PC, Excel and Word, E-mail
- Be driven and passionate about photography and the importance of archives for South Africa’s future
MAINTENANCE INTERN
The successful incumbent will be assisting Handyman performing multiple maintenance tasks throughout the day.
Position Requires:
- Grade 12 or equivalent technical qualification.
- Experience with hardware tools and electrical equipment
- Basic understanding of electrical, plumbing or HVAC systems
- Basic math skills
- Good communication skills
- Basic knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety.
HUMAN RESOURCES INTERN
The overall objective of the HR Intern is to assist in handling administrative tasks, maintaining records and personnel files, preparing for recruitment needs, and planning employee focused events.
Position Requires:
- Degree/Ndip HRM, or any relevant qualification
- Basic knowledge of South African labor laws
- Accountable and able to handle confidential matters
- Organized and attention to detail
SUPPLYCHAIN MANAGEMENT INTERN
To provide general supply chain management administrative support to the department so as to ensure that service delivery is optimised
Position Requires:
- Diploma or Degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, purchasing or relevant
- Knowledge of customer service principles and practice
- Excellent communication skills
- Must be Computer Literate (MS Office)
TECHNICAL ASSISTANT INTERN.
Position Requires:
- Degree/Diploma Performing Arts, relevant Theatre Qualifications
- Ability to manage and motivate a team of people in a very stressful environment
- Able to work under pressure
- Programming cues with a mixing console for a shows or events.
- Knowledge of sound/ lighting.

- 21 -35 years
- 12 months fixed term contract – 1 February 2022 – 31 January 2023

- Certificated copy of ID and Affidavit stating that the applicant is currently unemployed prior to commencing the programme

- Knowledge of or an interest in the creative arts would be an advantage but is not a requirement.
